With COVID-19 currently keeping most of the world indoors at home, many people face an unexpected challenge, losing their jobs. According to a recent CTV News article, more than 1 million part-time and full-time jobs have been lost in Ontario alone since the COVID-19 pandemic started. This is undoubtedly an uncertain time we’re in, and losing your job because of this pandemic can be a real possibility. If you’ve lost your job and are left wondering what to do next, we’ve got some beneficial steps you can take to get yourself back on track.

Take a Step Back

Losing a job is a significant change, whether it comes from a pandemic or not. After being busy and steadily employed, it can feel daunting not having something to keep you productive. But it is important to remain calm and not let feelings of self-doubt or fear take hold of you. Designate some of this time to focus on your mental health and be with the ones you love. You will get through this period.

Look at Your Budget

Now is an excellent time to go over your budget (or make one if you haven’t created one yet) and see where you can make some cutbacks. Do you really need that streaming service right now? Or take out food? You can find ways to reduce spending and adjust your budget by looking at where your money is going. Once you determine what is necessary and what isn’t, you can make changes to your spending habits. Here is a helpful list from TD Bank to get you started.

Learn a New Skill

There is no better time to learn something new than when you are stuck at home. Use this time to learn something you’ve always had an interest in and explore it. Or brush up on some skills related to your field. There are plenty of free resources online that you can use, even if it is just Youtube! Take this chance to improve and give yourself an advantage when you get back into the job market.

Emergency Response Benefits

During this challenging time, the Government of Canada created the Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) (which has most recently evolved into Employment Insurance) to help people carry on after losing their jobs due to COVID-19. This benefit helps people by providing a steady income source for up to four months, protecting Canadians’ financial well-being. Visit the Canadian Government’s website for more information about the benefit and how it can help.
